Horse Shoe Brewery

The Horse Shoe Brewery was an English brewery established in 1764 at the junction of Tottenham Court Road and Oxford Street in the City of Westminster, London, and from 1809 it operated as Henry Meux and Co, becoming one of London largest producers of porter. It is remembered chiefly for the London Beer Flood of 17 October 1814, when a huge vat ruptured and released roughly 7,600 barrels of porter into the surrounding streets, killing eight people and causing about 23,000 pounds in damage. The original brewery closed in 1921 and was demolished the following year, with the Dominion Theatre later built on the site, though the Meux company continued brewing at other premises until 1966.
