HarperCollins Publishers LLC is a British-American publishing conglomerate regarded as one of the Big Five English-language publishers, alongside Penguin Random House, Hachette, Macmillan and Simon and Schuster. It is headquartered in London and New York City and is a subsidiary of News Corp. The name combines those of its two predecessors. Harper and Brothers was founded in New York in 1817 by James Harper and his brother John, and later became Harper and Row; William Collins, Sons was founded in Glasgow in 1819. News Corp acquired Harper and Row in 1987, became sole owner of Collins in 1989, and merged the two that year, with a logo that joins the flame of Harper's torch to the water of Collins' fountain. HarperCollins publishes through many imprints in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, India and China, and Brian Murray has been its president and chief executive since 2008.
