Hammerson plc is a British real estate investment trust headquartered in London, a major owner of shopping centres and retail destinations in the United Kingdom, Ireland and France. It was founded in 1942 by Lewis Hammerson as a construction and property development firm, and shifted over subsequent decades toward owning and managing large retail properties, including major regional shopping centres such as the Bullring in Birmingham and Brent Cross in London. Hammerson has repositioned its portfolio in recent years away from large enclosed shopping centres and toward smaller flagship city-centre retail and mixed-use "flagship destination" assets, alongside selling many of its retail park and outlet properties, as it responded to structural pressures on traditional shopping centre retail from online commerce.
