The Guinness Brewery, based at St. James's Gate in Dublin, was founded in 1759 by Arthur Guinness and is the world's largest brewer of stout. It became Ireland's largest brewery by 1838 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1886, later merging with Grand Metropolitan in 1997 to form Diageo plc, its current owner; a 2019 Diageo report found the St. James's Gate site operating at over 90 percent capacity and among the most profitable breweries in the world. The brewery is historically notable for pioneering quality-control statistics, employing William Sealy Gosset, who developed Student's t-test there.
