Fortescue Ltd is an Australian multinational mining company headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, focused on iron ore. It was founded in 2003 by mining entrepreneur Andrew Forrest as Fortescue Metals Group, and it rapidly developed iron ore mines, a private railway and a port in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, becoming one of the world's largest iron ore producers within roughly a decade of its founding and challenging the long-established dominance of the already-live Rio Tinto Group and BHP Group Limited in the Pilbara. The company renamed itself Fortescue Ltd in 2023 as it expanded into green hydrogen and renewable energy alongside its core iron ore mining business.
