Foot Locker, Inc. is an American retailer of athletic footwear and apparel. The Foot Locker store brand traces to Kinney Shoe Corporation, a shoe retail chain owned by the F.W. Woolworth Company, which opened the first Foot Locker store in 1974. When Woolworth closed its remaining variety stores and restructured around its specialty retail chains in the 1990s, it renamed itself Venator Group, and in 2001 Venator adopted the Foot Locker name for the whole company, reflecting that Foot Locker and its sister athletic-shoe chains had become its core business.
