Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, meaning Italian State Railways, is the state-owned holding company for Italy's national rail network, headquartered in Rome. Its predecessor, Ferrovie dello Stato, was created in 1905 when the Italian state nationalized the country's major private railway lines, and the group was reorganized into its present holding-company structure in 1992. Through subsidiaries including Trenitalia for passenger service, the group operates Italy's high-speed and regional rail network and has also expanded internationally, including ownership of the British rail operator that runs part of England's East Coast route network.
