Fairfax Financial Holdings is a Canadian diversified financial holding company headquartered in Toronto, founded in 1985 by its long-serving chairman and chief executive Prem Watsa, who built the company around property and casualty insurance and reinsurance before expanding it into a broader conglomerate spanning consumer services, retail, logistics, agriculture, hospitality and banking interests across multiple continents. Fairfax operates through some 26 decentralized insurance and reinsurance subsidiaries writing tens of billions of dollars in gross premiums annually, and manages a large consolidated investment portfolio alongside its underwriting operations, ranking among the top twenty property and casualty insurers in the world.
