Faber and Faber Limited, known as Faber & Faber or simply Faber, is an independent publishing house in London, founded in 1929. It grew out of the Scientific Press and the firm Faber and Gwyer, which Geoffrey Faber founded in 1925 with Sir Maurice and Lady Gwyer, and Faber chose the name Faber and Faber although no second Faber was involved. T. S. Eliot joined early as a literary adviser and later became an editor and director. Its list is best known for poetry and drama and has included W. H. Auden, Samuel Beckett, Philip Larkin, Sylvia Plath, Ted Hughes, Seamus Heaney, William Golding and Kazuo Ishiguro, among many other authors. The company was named the KPMG Publisher of the Year in 2006. Its American branch was sold to Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1998, and the partnership ended in 2015, when Faber began distributing directly in the United States.
