Etihad Airways is the second flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates alongside Emirates, headquartered in Abu Dhabi and established by a royal decree of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi's ruler in 2003, with flights beginning in 2003. Wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi through the Abu Dhabi state investment vehicle, Etihad operates from its hub at Zayed International Airport and built its early growth strategy around equity investments in a number of smaller international carriers, several of which it later divested after financial difficulties in the late 2010s. It positions itself as a premium long-haul carrier competing directly with its larger Gulf rivals Emirates and Qatar Airways.
