Ethiopian Airlines is the flag carrier of Ethiopia, founded in 1945 with early operational assistance from Trans World Airlines and headquartered at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, which it has built into one of Africa's most significant aviation hubs for connections between Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The wholly state-owned airline has grown into Africa's largest carrier by fleet size, revenue and route network, resisting the financial struggles that have affected many other African and Middle Eastern national carriers, and it operates an extensive cargo division alongside its passenger business. Ethiopian Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance and has also pursued equity partnerships establishing affiliated carriers in other African countries as part of a strategy to expand pan-African connectivity under its own commercial leadership.
