The Emperor Franz Joseph Railway was an Austrian private railway company, named for Emperor Franz Joseph I, founded by the Bohemian nobleman Prince Johann Adolf II of Schwarzenberg after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. It built its first section between Budweis and Pilsen in 1868 and completed a route linking Vienna to Prague and to Eger in Bohemia by 1871, growing its network to 715 kilometres by 1872. The state nationalized the railway in 1884, and its importance declined after the Second World War once the Iron Curtain cut across its old routes, though regional service continues on parts of the line today.
