Dominion Stores (Newfoundland and Labrador)

Dominion Stores (Newfoundland and Labrador) is a regional supermarket banner operated by Loblaw Companies Limited across the island of Newfoundland, with eleven locations as of the mid 2020s. The chain began around 1959 as Ayre's Supermarkets, a division of the local Ayre and Sons department store, which was bought by Argus Corporation in 1963 and renamed under the Dominion banner already used by Argus's national Dominion Stores chain. After a 1976 joint venture with Baine, Johnston and Co and the breakup of the national Dominion chain under Argus in the mid 1980s, the Newfoundland stores passed to Baine Johnston and were later merged with other local chains under the name Amalco Foods, before Loblaw acquired the Newfoundland operation outright in 1995. Loblaw has kept the historic Dominion name in Newfoundland and Labrador even after the rest of Canada's Dominion Stores chain disappeared, while converting the stores to its own store formats and private label products; in August 2024 the stores adopted branding aligned with Loblaw's Real Atlantic Superstore and Real Canadian Superstore banners while keeping the Dominion name.
