De Beers is a British multinational diamond company specializing in the mining, trading and marketing of diamonds, with operations in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Canada. Founded in 1888 by the British businessman Cecil Rhodes with financing from Alfred Beit and the Rothschild banking house, it controlled the large majority of the world's rough diamond distribution for most of the twentieth century, a dominance later consolidated under Ernest Oppenheimer, though its share of world supply has since fallen substantially.
