DB Cargo UK is a rail freight operator in the United Kingdom, headquartered in Doncaster, England, and a subsidiary of the German state railway group Deutsche Bahn. The company traces its origins to North and South Railways, established by Wisconsin Central in early 1995 to acquire several freight businesses from the privatized British Rail, and it was rebranded English, Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS) in 1996, DB Schenker Rail in 2009, and finally DB Cargo UK in 2016. It specializes in bulk and intermodal rail freight, including coal, steel, aggregates and containers, operating a large fleet of diesel and electric locomotives and thousands of wagons, with major maintenance facilities at Toton. By the late 1990s the company's predecessor controlled about 90 percent of Britain's rail freight market.
