Thales S.A. is a French multinational company headquartered in the Paris area, providing electronic systems and equipment for the aerospace, defense and security markets. Its lineage traces to Thomson-CSF, a French electronics group that adopted the Thales name in 2000, chosen as a deliberate reference to the ancient Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus. Thales designs avionics, radar systems, and defense electronics, and it is a major partner in European satellite and space programs, co-owning Thales Alenia Space and the ground-systems company Telespazio jointly with the Italian aerospace and defense company Leonardo.

The company was originally founded as Thomson-CSF in 1968. Following its privatisation, heavy restructuring, and reorganisation around three business areas (defence, aerospace and information technology), the firm was rebranded Thales Group in 2000, reportedly due to the company's desire to simplify and improve the group's brand.
