Coles Group Limited is an Australian public company operating several retail chains, chiefly the Coles Supermarkets grocery chain and associated liquor retail operations, and is Australia's second largest retailer by revenue behind Woolworths Group. It was founded on 9 April 1914 in Collingwood, Victoria, when George Coles opened the Coles Variety Store on Smith Street. Headquartered at 800 Toorak Road, Hawthorn East, Victoria, Coles operated 1,858 stores as of 2025, generating 44.487 billion Australian dollars in revenue and employing about 115,000 people; the company traded as Coles Myer Ltd from 1986 to 2006, was owned by Wesfarmers from 2007 to 2018, and has since been an independent public company on the Australian Securities Exchange.
