Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad

The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad, reporting mark CNSM and known as the North Shore Line, was an interurban railroad that ran passenger and freight service over an 88.9 mile route between the Chicago Loop and downtown Milwaukee, plus an 8.6 mile branch between Lake Bluff and Mundelein, Illinois, and also operated streetcar, city bus and motor coach services along its route. Extensively improved under the one-time ownership of Samuel Insull, the line was noted for its high operating speeds, substantial physical plant and innovative services such as its ferry truck freight operations and its streamlined Electroliner trainsets, and the railroad historian William D. Middleton called it a super interurban whose closure marked the end of the interurban era in the United States. Since 1964 the Chicago Transit Authority's Yellow Line has run over a short segment of its former main line to Skokie, Illinois, and examples of its rolling stock are preserved in railroad museums.
