The Chicago and Aurora Railroad was a direct predecessor company of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. It began as the Aurora Branch Railroad, chartered in February 1849 as a twelve mile branch line that the modern Class I carrier BNSF credits as the start of its own network; renamed the Chicago and Aurora Railroad in 1853, the company extended its tracks from Chicago to Mendota by way of Aurora, Illinois, on a line that grew into what became the oldest commuter railroad in the Chicago area.
