Ceske drahy

Ceske drahy (CD) is the principal state-owned railway operator providing passenger rail services in the Czech Republic, headquartered in Prague. It was established in 1993 after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, taking over passenger and freight operations from the former Czechoslovak State Railways, and in 2003 spun off infrastructure management to a separate company, Sprava zeleznic. Ceske drahy carries roughly 168 million passengers a year across regional, long-distance and international services, and owns the freight subsidiary CD Cargo, one of the five largest rail freight operators in Europe. The company recorded its first profit in 2007 and has since modernized its fleet with Pendolino tilting trains and other new rolling stock, while facing competition and regulatory scrutiny over its rivalry with the open-access operator RegioJet.
