Carrefour is a French multinational retail and wholesale corporation headquartered in Massy, France, founded in 1959 by Marcel Fournier, Denis Defforey and Jacques Defforey, opening its first store near Annecy the following year. Named after the French word for crossroads, Carrefour pioneered Europe's first hypermarket format on 15 June 1963. As of 2024 the company operates about 14,000 stores in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa, and its 81.25 billion euros of revenue in 2021 made it the seventh largest retailer in the world by revenue.
