Burger King is an American multinational fast food chain that traces its founding to Insta-Burger King, opened in Jacksonville, Florida in 1953, and renamed Burger King in 1954 after being purchased by franchisees David Edgerton and James McLamore. The chain is built around the Whopper hamburger, introduced in 1957, and now operates roughly 19,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries, nearly all as franchises. It has been owned since 2014 by Restaurant Brands International, formed when Burger King merged with the Canadian coffee and doughnut chain Tim Hortons, and it also carries a history of ownership changes including a 2010 buyout by the investment firm 3G Capital.
