BT Group plc is a British multinational telecommunications company headquartered in London, descended from the telecommunications arm of the General Post Office and formed as British Telecommunications when that arm was split off as a public corporation in 1981, then privatized by the Thatcher government in 1984 in one of the first and largest British privatizations. It remains the largest fixed-line and broadband provider in the United Kingdom, and it owns the mobile network EE, acquired in 2016.
