The Bristol and Exeter Railway was an English railway company incorporated by act of Parliament in 1836 to connect Bristol and Exeter, built to broad gauge under engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and opened in stages between 1841 and 1844. It also built branches to Clevedon, Cheddar, Wells, Weston-super-Mare, Chard, Yeovil and Tiverton, and operated independently and profitably from 1849 until it amalgamated with the Great Western Railway in 1876 under the Great Western and Bristol and Exeter Railway Companies Amalgamation Act.
