BNP Paribas S.A. is a French multinational bank headquartered in Paris, the largest bank in the eurozone by total assets. It was formed in 2000 through the merger of Banque Nationale de Paris, itself created in 1966 from the merger of two older state banks, and Paribas, a merchant bank with roots reaching back to the nineteenth century. BNP Paribas operates across retail banking, corporate and institutional banking, and investment management, with a large domestic French retail network alongside major operations in Belgium, Italy and the United States through its BancWest and other subsidiaries. It ranks among the largest banks in the world by total assets and is considered a globally systemically important financial institution.
