Bayer is a German multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company headquartered in Leverkusen, founded in 1863 in Barmen by the dye salesman Friedrich Bayer and the dyer Johann Friedrich Weskott as a dyestuffs producer. It later expanded into pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare, and agricultural chemicals and seeds, and in 1899 launched acetylsalicylic acid under the trademarked name Aspirin, a drug that remains on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
