ArcelorMittal S.A. is a Luxembourg-based multinational steel manufacturing company, formed by the 2006 merger of Arcelor, itself formed in 2002 from French, Spanish and Luxembourgish steelmakers, and Mittal Steel, built up by Indian-born businessman Lakshmi Mittal through a series of acquisitions of formerly state-owned steel producers around the world beginning in the 1970s. It became the largest steel-producing company in the world by output, with operations spanning dozens of countries.
