Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc. is an American real estate investment trust headquartered in Pasadena, California, founded in 1994 by Joel Marcus and colleagues, originally to lease laboratory space to biotechnology tenants in Alexandria, Virginia, from which it took its name. It became the leading owner and developer of life-science real estate in the United States, building campuses of laboratory and office space leased to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and agricultural-technology companies.
