William Boyce Thompson (1869 to 1930) was an American mining engineer and financier, born in Virginia City, Montana Territory, and raised in Butte. He built a large fortune promoting low grade, large scale porphyry copper deposits in the western United States, including the Shannon Copper Company, the Nevada Consolidated company and the Magma mine at Superior, Arizona. After leaving the New York Stock Exchange in 1915 he founded the Newmont Company in 1916, which was incorporated as Newmont Corporation in 1921 and later became one of the leading gold producers. He was prominent in the Republican party, served on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 1914 to 1919, and joined an American Red Cross mission to Russia in 1917. His philanthropy included the Boyce Thompson Institute for plant research and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Arizona.
