Walter Lantz was an American cartoonist, animator, producer and director, best known for founding Walter Lantz Productions and creating Woody Woodpecker. Born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1899, he ran his family's grocery as a boy, took a mail-order drawing course and worked his way into animation at the International Film Service and the John R. Bray Studios. In 1928 he was hired to produce the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoons for Universal Pictures, and the article says he won the rights to the character in a poker wager with Universal president Carl Laemmle. By 1935 he was an independent producer supplying cartoons to Universal rather than overseeing its animation department. Woody Woodpecker first appeared in 1940 in an Andy Panda short and became a hit with his own series from 1941. Lantz died in 1994.
