Samuel J. Parker was the retail executive who turned PETsMART from a money-losing regional chain into the dominant pet superstore operator in the United States. Before joining he had spent 19 years with the Jewel supermarket chain and had served as president of Frame-N-Lens Optical and of the GEMCO division of Lucky Stores. Investors hired him as chairman of the company shortly after they removed its founders in 1989. He replaced the bare cement floors with tile, widened the aisles and brightened the lighting, stocked a full range of pet accessories and added grooming, veterinary and adoption services, and expanded the chain across the country. By 2001 he was chairman of the board and chief executive officer of PETsMART, Inc.
