An American academic who joined the Harvard Business School faculty in 1984 after sixteen years at Carnegie Mellon University, including service as dean of its business school from 1977 to 1983. With David P. Norton, he co-created the Balanced Scorecard, first published in the Harvard Business Review in 1992, and he separately co-developed activity-based costing.
