Richard Taylor, born on May 18, 1781 and died on December 1, 1858, was an English naturalist and publisher of scientific journals. Apprenticed to a London printer, he established his own printing business in 1803 in partnership with his father in Fleet Street, the firm that ultimately developed into Taylor & Francis. He became joint editor of the Philosophical Magazine in 1822, founded the Annals of Natural History in 1838, and from 1837 to 1852 edited and published Scientific Memoirs, selected from the transactions of foreign academies of science. In 1852 the chemist Dr William Francis joined him as partner, forming Taylor & Francis. Taylor also served for 35 years on the council of the City of London and helped found the City of London School, retiring in 1852 and dying in Richmond, Surrey.
