Mo Ibrahim is a Sudanese-British businessman who founded the mobile telecommunications company Celtel in 1998, building it into one of Africa's largest mobile operators across more than a dozen countries before selling it in 2005. A former engineer who had worked in mobile telecommunications technology in Britain before turning to entrepreneurship, he was noted for structuring Celtel with anti-corruption safeguards intended to keep the business clean of bribery pressures common in some of the markets it operated in. After selling Celtel he founded the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, known for the Ibrahim Index of African Governance and the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, which recognizes former African heads of state who governed democratically and left office at the end of their constitutional terms.
