Luis von Ahn is a Guatemalan-American entrepreneur who founded the CAPTCHA-derived reCAPTCHA system, later sold to Google, and in 2011 co-founded the language-learning company Duolingo, which he has led as chief executive through its growth into one of the most widely used education apps in the world and its 2021 public listing on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Duolingo's free, gamified approach to language instruction, combined with a business model built on optional subscriptions and advertising, grew out of von Ahn's earlier academic research at Carnegie Mellon University into human computation, using small tasks performed by many people to accomplish work computers could not yet do alone.
