Howard D. Schultz is an American businessman and author, born 19 July 1953 in New York City. He joined Starbucks in 1982 and later left to found the Il Giornale coffeehouse chain, which merged with Starbucks in the late 1980s. He served as Starbucks chairman and chief executive officer across three periods, 1986 to 2000, 2008 to 2017, and briefly as interim chief executive from 2022 to 2023, and under his leadership the company grew into the largest coffeehouse chain in the world. He also owned the Seattle SuperSonics basketball team from 2001 to 2006.
