Henry Clay Frick (1849 to 1919) was an American industrialist, financier and art patron from western Pennsylvania. In 1871 he joined a small partnership making coke for the steel industry, and by 1880 he had bought out his partners; the firm, renamed H. C. Frick and Company, came to control most of the coal output of Pennsylvania. Through his partnership with Andrew Carnegie he became chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company, where his management was marked by hard opposition to unions and by the violent suppression of the 1892 Homestead Strike, after which he survived an assassination attempt. He later helped found U.S. Steel. He is also remembered for his link to the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, whose dam failed in the 1889 Johnstown Flood, and for the Frick Collection, the art museum created from his bequest.
