Eric Emerson Schmidt, born on April 27, 1955, is an American businessman and former computer engineer who was chief executive officer of Google from 2001 to 2011 and its executive chairman from 2011 to 2015. He was executive chairman of the parent company Alphabet from 2015 to 2017 and a technical advisor there until 2020. As an intern at Bell Labs in 1975 he co-authored Lex, a program for generating lexical analysers for Unix. He joined Sun Microsystems in 1983 and was chief executive of Novell from 1997 to 2001.
