Elizabeth Anne Holmes (born 1984) is an American businesswoman who founded the blood testing company Theranos in 2003 while a student at Stanford University, which she left before graduating. Theranos claimed to have developed technology that could run a wide range of tests from just a small finger prick of blood, and by 2015 the company stated valuation had made Holmes, according to Forbes, the youngest self made female billionaire in the country. Starting in 2015 journalists and regulators began raising serious doubts about whether Theranos technology worked as claimed and whether Holmes had misled investors, and in 2018 the Securities and Exchange Commission charged Theranos, Holmes and former company president Ramesh Sunny Balwani with fraud. Holmes was indicted on federal criminal charges in 2018, and in January 2022 a jury convicted her of defrauding investors, and she was sentenced to more than eleven years in federal prison and, along with Balwani, ordered to pay 452 million dollars in restitution.
