Cecil Rhodes

Cecil Rhodes (5 July 1853 to 26 March 1902) was a British mining magnate and politician in southern Africa who served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. He founded De Beers Consolidated Mines and gained near-monopoly control of the world diamond market, and through the British South Africa Company he established the territory that became known as Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe and Zambia. Rhodes also promoted a Cape to Cairo railway and created the Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University, described as the oldest graduate scholarship in the world.
