Energy is sector 10 of the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), the industry taxonomy developed in 1999 by MSCI and Standard & Poor's for classifying public companies by their principal business activity. Under GICS, sector 10 is organized as a single industry group, also named Energy, itself divided into two industries: Energy Equipment & Services, which covers oil and gas drilling together with the equipment and services that support drilling and production, and Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels, which covers integrated oil and gas companies, exploration and production, refining and marketing, storage and transportation, and coal and other consumable fuels. A company, product, or service is classified into this sector when its principal business activity falls within one of these two industries.
