Biohydrogen

Biohydrogen is hydrogen gas produced by biological processes rather than by conventional industrial methods, making it a candidate for a clean, renewable fuel. It can be generated from biomass and organic waste, and certain photosynthetic microorganisms, including algae and cyanobacteria, can produce it directly by splitting water using sunlight. Its main appeal is that hydrogen burns cleanly and can come from renewable sources, but the organisms that produce it are typically sensitive to oxygen and yield only small amounts, and the resulting gas is explosive and hard to store and transport, so research into algae- and cyanobacteria-based production continues as scientists work toward making it practical.
