Waxes are a diverse class of organic compounds that are lipophilic solids, malleable near room temperature, made up mainly of higher alkanes and lipids with melting points typically above 40 degrees Celsius that become low viscosity liquids when heated. They are insoluble in water but dissolve readily in nonpolar organic solvents such as hexane, benzene and chloroform. Both natural and synthetic waxes exist, with natural waxes drawn from plant, animal and petroleum sources.
