The Sony Walkman is a line of portable audio players, beginning with the first portable cassette player released by Sony in July 1979. It created the mass consumer market for private, mobile listening to recorded music, sold hundreds of millions of units across cassette, CD (Discman) and digital variants over subsequent decades, and its name became a generic term for portable personal stereos in many languages.
