A Tootsie Pop is a hard candy lollipop with a chewy, chocolate-flavored center, invented in 1931 by an employee of The Sweets Company of America after he combined his own Tootsie Roll with his daughter's lollipop. The underlying candy, the Tootsie Roll, had itself been invented in 1896 by Leo Hirschfield, and the company later renamed itself Tootsie Roll Industries in 1969; by 2002 the company was producing about 60 million Tootsie Rolls and 20 million Tootsie Pops every day.
