A shear pin is a mechanical detail designed so that a specific outcome occurs once a predetermined force is applied. It can work as a safeguard that is built to break and so protect other parts of a machine, or as a conditional operator that will not let a mechanical device operate until the correct force has been applied. In either role the pin is defined by the predetermined force at which it acts, which is what separates it from an ordinary fastener that is simply meant to hold.
