Sakuma drops

Sakuma drops are a hard candy from Japan flavored with fruit juice, sold since 1908 during the Meiji period and now a widely recognized Japanese confection, packaged in 4-by-3.5-inch tin cans with a pull cap whose changing designs make the tins popular with collectors. They were originally made by Sakuma Candy, a Tokyo company founded in 1908 whose production stopped during the Second World War because of sugar rationing; after the war, former employees formed two successor companies, one keeping the original name and the other, written in katakana, acquiring the trademark to Sakuma Drops and selling its candy in green tins while the original company used red tins under the name Sakuma's Drops. In November 2022 the original manufacturer announced it would close in January 2023, citing rising material costs.
