A pintle is a pin or bolt, usually inserted into a gudgeon, that forms part of a pivot or hinge. The pin lets one part turn relative to another while the pair stay joined. Other applications include the pintle and lunette ring used for towing, where the pin on one vehicle engages a ring on the thing it pulls, and pintle pins that secure casters in furniture. The same simple pin and socket arrangement therefore appears in very different settings, from hinges and pivots to towing hardware and the wheels of chairs and tables. This atlas treats it as an industrial hardware component, sold for use in larger assemblies.
