Phenylalanine, given the symbol Phe or F, is an alpha amino acid with the formula C9H11NO2, one of the four aromatic amino acids and one of the 21 proteinogenic amino acids common to all life. It is one of nine essential amino acids that the body cannot make on its own and must obtain from food, and it occurs naturally in the milk of mammals. In the body it serves as a precursor for other important biochemical compounds, including certain neurotransmitters and pigments.
