Meat and bone meal

Meat and bone meal (MBM) is a product of the rendering industry, typically containing 48 to 52 percent protein, 33 to 35 percent ash, 8 to 12 percent fat and 4 to 7 percent water. It is used mainly in animal feed to improve the amino acid profile of the diet, but feeding MBM to cattle is thought to have spread bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, so MBM is now banned from feed for ruminant animals in most regions, though it is still fed to monogastric animals. In the United States it remains an inexpensive protein ingredient in pet food, while in Europe most MBM is now burned as a fossil-fuel replacement for energy generation, used as fuel in cement kilns, or landfilled or incinerated.
